CSE Option in Mechanical Science and Engineering
CSE Option in Mechanical Science and Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE) offers CSE Options in both the M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in both Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (TAM). Students electing the CSE Option for either degree program are expected to satisfy all regular requirements for graduate study in MechSE. A student will normally be able to satisfy the requirements for the CSE Option by taking elective courses within the MechSE graduate programs.
M.S. Program in ME
For the M.S. in ME with the CSE Option, the following additional requirements must be satisfied: one course must be from CSE core courses, and one course must be from an approved list of CSE courses. The M.S. thesis, if any, must have a significant computational component.
M.S. Program in TAM
For the M.S. in TAM with the CSE Option, the following additional requirements must be satisfied: two courses must be taken from CSE core courses, and one additional course from an approved list of CSE courses. The M.S. thesis, if any, must have a significant computational component.
Ph.D. Program in ME
For the Ph.D. in ME with the CSE Option, the following additional requirements must be satisfied: two courses must be from CSE core courses, and two course must be from an approved list of CSE courses. Courses already taken for an M.S. with the CSE Option may be counted toward this requirement. The Ph.D. thesis must have a significant computational component, and the thesis committee must include at least one CSE-affiliated faculty member from a department other than MechSE.
Ph.D. Program in TAM
For the Ph.D. in TAM with the CSE Option, the following additional requirements must be satisfied: two courses must be taken from CSE core courses, and three additional courses from an approved list of CSE courses or other CSE courses. Courses already taken for an M.S. with the CSE Option may be counted toward this requirement. The Ph.D. thesis must have a significant computational component, and the thesis committee must include at least one CSE-affiliated faculty member from a department other than MechSE.
